چکیده

This paper describes a numerical investigation of the acoustic resonance occurring at specific flow speeds when a long two-dimensional rectangular plate is placed on the centre-line of a duct. The flowMach number is sufficiently small that the flow and acoustic fields can be modelled separately; however, the effect of the acoustic field in modifying the flow field is accounted for and, in turn, the flow field solution determines the time-dependent source distribution for the acoustic model. This allows the range of flow speeds, or equivalently the associated Strouhal numbers, where resonance is possible to be predicted. It is shown that the Strouhal number based on plate chord (or length) displays a stepping behaviour as the plate length is increased. The main source or sink region where energy is transferred between the acoustic and flow fields is shown to be immediately downstream of the trailing edge of the plate. Visualizations of the numerical solution show that the timing when the vortices enter this region relative to the phase of the acoustic cycle is crucial in determining if resonance can occur and is the cause of the observed stepwise increase. Comparison is made with previous physical experiments. r 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Local Heat Transfer Coefficients in a Rectangular Duct with Plate Blockages of Variable Stream Wise Spacing

An experimental investigation is conducted to determine the effect of repeated-plate blockages of variable streamwise spacing on heat transfer characteristics of turbulent flow in rectangular ducts. The plates are attached to the upper and lower walls in a staggered arrangement. The experiments are carried out by mass transfer and the analogy between heat and mass transfer provides the necessar...

Fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in a curved rectangular duct using Al2O3-water nanofluid

In the present research, the laminar forced convective heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics for Al2O3-water nanofluid flowing in different bend (i.e., 180o and 90o) pipes have been investigated numerically in a three-dimensional computational domain using the finite volume technique. The effects of different pertinent parameters, such as the Reynolds number of the duct, volume fraction ...

Aerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy

The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...

MHD duct flows at moderate Hartmann number

A numerical study of steady-state, fully developed, MHD duct flows is presented for the case of an applied transverse magnetic field and a two-dimensional variation of the flow parameters in the plane perpendicular to the flow direction, with no variations in fluid properties. Solutions are found for (i) rectangular ducts with no obstacles and (ii) rectangular ducts containing thin flat plates,...

Acoustic Model Identification Using Inverse Model

Sound measured at various points around the environment can be evaluated by a series of multi-pole sources and their acoustic strength can be acquired. In this numerical study, a method, called the inverse method, was examined to achieve this goal. A variety of arrangements of different sources were considered and the acoustic strength of these sources was acquired. Through the application of t...
